You may think: nothing beats freshly caught fish...
Think again!
Martinique, like all tropical islands, is not immune to ciguatera poisoning.
It is caused by a toxic microalgae living in damaged coral reefs.
Some fish consume it, it then enters the food chain and can end up on your plate!
As it is a toxin, cooking the fish does not help!
Symptoms include: severe itching, diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness... and there is no known treatment to prevent it!
Fortunately, cases of ciguatera poisoning are rare in Martinique.
The risks vary depending on the species of fish, so don't hesitate to ask a local fisherman for advice, but know that there is no such thing as zero risk!
