Just like Saint-Pierre, Morne Rouge also suffered the fury of Mount Pelée.
The pyroclastic flow, which devastated Saint-Pierre on May 8, 1902, only grazed Morne Rouge.
However, 3 months later, on August 30, 1902, a new explosion of the volcano completely destroyed the town.
In tribute to the 1500 victims of this tragedy, a statue was erected in the town center.
