History of the 1943 Bombing of Ploiesti, Romania

Bombing of Ploiesti, Romania during World War II

Except for a few old churches, Ploiesti has very few of the grand mansions seen frequently in Bucharest.

This is because the city was severely bombed during World War II...

Bombed by American forces!

In 1940, like Italy, Romania sided with Nazi Germany.

The oil fields and refineries in the region became the main fuel supply for Hitler’s army!

On August 1, 1943, 178 American B-24 Liberator bombers unleashed a firestorm on Ploiesti and the surrounding area.

This was the largest bombing mission the Allied forces had conducted up to that point.
