With its enormous scale, Ceausescu's Palace literally dominates the center of Bucharest.
It was meant to symbolize centralized, totalitarian power.
The original name of the palace was "Casa Poporului," meaning the House of the People!
However, Romanians humorously renamed it "Casa Nebunului," or the House of the Madman!
It was only after the fall of the dictator in December 1989 that it took its current name: the Palace of the Parliament.
