The Romanian Roma, or "Roms" as they call themselves, represent around 10% of Romania's total population.
This nomadic people originated from northern India in the 11th century and settled in Romania around the 14th century.
In the 16th century, several subgroups - Gitans, Manouches, Bohemians - spread across Europe.
For 600 years, the Roma in Romania have lived on the margins of Romanian society, with their nomadic lifestyle, language, and customs setting them apart from Romanians.
Romanians and Roma generally do not mix, and Romanians are often shocked and indignant to hear that, in some Western countries, confusion exists between the two groups!
